How to cancel Claude.
Cancelling Claude Pro or Max is a two-click job on the web — but three things trip people up. Where you signed up decides where you cancel: a subscription bought in the iOS or Android app is managed by Apple or Google, not by claude.ai. Cancellation only takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you have to do it at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge. And the big one: your Claude subscription is completely separate from Anthropic API billing on console.anthropic.com — cancelling Pro does nothing to stop API charges.
What you need ready.
- Know where you originally subscribed — claude.ai/Desktop, the iOS app, or the Android app. The cancellation path is different for each.
- Be logged into the exact account that is being charged (not a second free account on the same email alias).
- Check whether you also have separate Anthropic API / Console billing — that is cancelled in a different place.
Step-by-step.
Verbatim from the Claude help center on June 2, 2026. We re-verify quarterly.
- Step 01
Open Settings from your initials
Log in to claude.ai on a browser (or open the Claude Desktop app). Click your initials or name in the lower-left corner and choose Settings.
- Step 02
Go to the Billing tab
In Settings, open Billing (claude.ai/settings/billing). This is where every paid-plan change for Pro and Max lives.
- Step 03
Click Cancel
Click the Cancel button. Claude confirms the date your paid plan ends — you keep Pro or Max features until the end of the current billing period.
- Step 04
Subscribed on mobile? Cancel through the store instead
If you bought the plan in the iOS or Android app, there is no Cancel button on claude.ai. Cancel via Apple (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) or Google Play (Play Store → Subscriptions) using the account you subscribed with.
What trips people up.
- Critical
Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal
Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, but you must cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Cancel inside that window and you are charged for one more period.
- Critical
Mobile subscriptions are managed by Apple or Google
If you signed up in the iOS or Android app, the claude.ai Billing tab won't show a Cancel button. The subscription is store-managed and has to be cancelled in the App Store or Google Play — uninstalling the app does not cancel it.
- Critical
Cancelling Pro does not stop Anthropic API charges
Claude Pro, Max, and Team are separate from the Anthropic API and Console (console.anthropic.com), which is billed by usage. If you have an API key running somewhere, cancelling your subscription leaves those charges untouched — you have to stop the API separately.
- Caution
Payments are generally non-refundable
Per Anthropic's Consumer Terms, payments are non-refundable except where the Terms or local law require it (for example, EU/UK statutory rights). Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not refund the current period by default.
What happens to your account.
Cancelling drops you to the Free plan at the end of the paid period — your account and conversation history stay accessible; you lose paid-only capabilities (higher usage limits, larger context windows, priority access). Data handling follows Anthropic's consumer privacy policy. Deleting your account entirely is a separate, permanent action.
What you get back.
Anthropic treats payments as non-refundable except where its Consumer Terms or local law require otherwise. To check eligibility, log in, click your initials → Get help → Send us a message → Accept → Claude Refund Request, and follow the prompts. Subscriptions bought on iOS or Android are refunded by Apple or Google, not Anthropic.
Lower-friction options.
If you don’t need to fully cancel, one of these often accomplishes what you actually want.
Switch Max down to Pro
If Max ($100 or $200/mo) is more than you need but you still want Claude, drop to Pro ($20/mo) from the same Billing tab instead of cancelling outright.
Downgrade to Free
Free keeps your account and history with lower usage limits. It's the no-cost middle ground if you only use Claude occasionally.
Track the cancellation. Spot the charge that didn’t stop.
Cancelling is one click. Verifying that the charge actually stops on your next statement is the part most people skip. Spendrein watches your bank statement after a cancellation and flags any recurring charge from the same vendor that keeps coming through, so you find out from us before you find out from a surprise renewal invoice.
Spendrein does not impersonate you with vendor support agents or click through their cancellation flows. It tracks what you did, watches for the result on your statement, and gives you a public reference you can share with the vendor if they push back.
Cancelling Claude, plainly explained.
Where is the Claude cancel button?
On the web or desktop app: click your initials in the lower-left corner, open Settings, go to the Billing tab (claude.ai/settings/billing), and click Cancel. There is no separate cancellation page — the Billing tab is where Pro and Max are cancelled.
Why don't I see a Cancel button in Claude?
Almost always because you subscribed in the iOS or Android app. Store-managed subscriptions can't be cancelled from claude.ai — cancel through the App Store (Settings → your name → Subscriptions) or Google Play (Play Store → Subscriptions) instead.
Does cancelling Claude Pro stop my Anthropic API charges?
No. Claude Pro, Max, and Team are billed separately from the Anthropic API and Console (console.anthropic.com). API usage is metered and billed on its own cycle, so cancelling your subscription does nothing to it — you have to stop the API separately by removing keys and the payment method.
Will I lose my chats and projects if I cancel Claude?
No. Cancelling moves you to the Free plan at the end of the billing period. Your account and conversation history stay; what you lose are paid features like higher usage limits and larger context windows.
When does my Claude cancellation take effect?
At the end of your current billing period — you keep Pro or Max until then. To avoid being billed for the next period, cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date.
Can I get a refund on Claude Pro or Max?
Anthropic's Consumer Terms make payments generally non-refundable except where local law requires otherwise. You can check eligibility through your initials → Get help → Claude Refund Request. App Store or Google Play purchases are refunded by Apple or Google.
