How to cancel Slack.

Slack treats cancellation as 'downgrade to Free.' The flow is fully self-serve for Pro and Business+; Enterprise+ requires a call to Slack Sales. Unused paid time converts to Slack credits — not a cash refund — and those credits expire when your paid plan terminates. Plan-feature loss is the consequential part, especially the file and message-history limits on the Free tier.

Before you start

What you need ready.

  • Workspace Owner role, or a member who upgraded the workspace (those are the two roles allowed to change the paid plan).
  • Knowledge of whether to keep your work on a free tier or move it elsewhere — Slack's Free plan caps message and file history.
  • If you're on Enterprise+, a path to your Slack rep — that tier isn't self-serve.
The flow

Step-by-step.

Verbatim from the Slack help center on May 19, 2026. We re-verify quarterly.

  1. Step 01

    Open Admin → Manage billing

From your desktop, click Admin in the sidebar. If you don't see Admin, click your workspace name to access workspace settings. Then select Manage billing from the menu.

  2. Step 02

    Open Change plan details

On the Overview tab, click Change plan details. This is the same flow used for upgrades, downgrades, and full cancellation.

  3. Step 03

    Select Downgrade to Free

Select Downgrade to Free and pick whether the change should take effect immediately or at your next renewal. Picking 'next renewal' is usually correct — you've already paid for the current period.

  4. Step 04

    Continue to checkout, then confirm

Click Continue to Checkout, review the downgrade details, then click Downgrade Slack. Slack confirms in the billing panel and via email.

Gotchas

What trips people up.

  • Caution

    Credits, not refunds

If you cancel mid-cycle, Slack credits your workspace account with Slack credits equal to the cost of the unused portion. Those credits have no cash value, are non-transferable, and expire when your paid plan terminates. Practically, if you've cancelled to Free, the credits are dead.

  • Critical

Message and file history caps hit immediately on Free

Slack's Free plan applies its standard message-history and file-access limits the moment the downgrade takes effect. Older messages aren't deleted, but they become inaccessible to free-plan members until you upgrade again.

  • Watch

    EU credit-card SCA prompt

Customers in the EU paying by credit card may be required to complete two-factor authentication during checkout, including for downgrades. Have access to the card's authentication channel before you start.

  • Caution

    Enterprise+ is not self-serve

Workspace Owners can self-serve cancel Pro and Business+ from the Admin panel. Enterprise+ cancellation goes through Slack Sales. Plan time for that conversation.

Data after cancellation

What happens to your account.

Slack does not delete messages or files when a workspace downgrades to Free. What changes is access: free workspaces lose visibility into older messages and the ability to download older files. Upgrading later restores the same content.

Refund policy

What you get back.

Slack does not refund unused paid time in cash. The unused portion converts to Slack credits, which apply to future Slack purchases on the same workspace, are non-transferable, and expire when the paid plan terminates.

Alternatives

Lower-friction options.

If you don’t need to fully cancel, one of these often accomplishes what you actually want.

  • Downgrade Business+ to Pro

Instead of going all the way to Free, downgrading Business+ → Pro keeps unlimited message history and most workspace features while cutting the per-seat cost. Same Admin → Manage billing flow.

  • Move to a fresh free workspace

If the goal is to start clean rather than rescue history, create a new free workspace and invite the team there. The old workspace can be archived or deleted later.

After you cancel

Track the cancellation. Spot the charge that didn’t stop.

Cancelling is one click. Verifying that the charge actually stops on your next statement is the part most people skip. Spendrein watches your bank statement after a cancellation and flags any recurring charge from the same vendor that keeps coming through, so you find out from us before you find out from a surprise renewal invoice.

Spendrein does not impersonate you with vendor support agents or click through their cancellation flows. It tracks what you did, watches for the result on your statement, and gives you a public reference you can share with the vendor if they push back.

Questions

Cancelling Slack, plainly explained.

  • Where is the Slack cancel button?

Admin → Manage billing → Overview → Change plan details → Downgrade to Free. Slack does not label any single button 'Cancel'; the cancellation path is a downgrade-to-Free flow.

  • Who can cancel a Slack subscription?

Workspace Owners, and members who originally upgraded the workspace, can change or cancel a paid Slack plan. Regular members cannot.

  • Will I lose my Slack messages and files when I cancel?

No — messages and files stay in the workspace. Access changes: Slack's Free plan caps message history and file visibility, so older content is hidden behind the paywall until you upgrade again.

  • Do I get a refund for unused months on Slack?

Not in cash. Slack credits the workspace with Slack credits equal to the unused portion. Those credits have no currency value, are non-refundable, and expire when the paid plan terminates.

  • How do I cancel a Slack Enterprise+ plan?

Enterprise+ cancellation is not self-serve. Contact your Slack representative or Slack Sales to start the process.

  • How fast does the Slack cancellation take effect?

You choose: immediately, or on the next renewal date. Picking the next renewal is usually correct because you already paid for the current period and the unused portion only converts to non-cash credits anyway.
