How to cancel Linear.

Linear's cancellation flow is two clicks and the policy is unusually explicit: no refunds, no mid-cycle proration, no exceptions. Cancellations and downgrades both take effect at the end of the subscription period — monthly or yearly. The 250-issue cap on Free is the gotcha most teams hit after dropping back to Free.

Before you start

What you need ready.

  • Workspace admin role (only admins can change or cancel a subscription).
  • Knowledge that the change applies only to the workspace you're in — Linear plans are per-workspace, not per-account.
  • Awareness that no mid-cycle refund or credit is issued — picking the right moment matters.
The flow

Step-by-step.

Verbatim from the Linear help center on May 19, 2026. We re-verify quarterly.

  1. Step 01

Open Settings → Workspace → Plans

In Linear, open Settings, then Workspace, then Plans. This is where every plan change happens.

  2. Step 02

    Change or cancel the subscription

On the Plans page, select the change you want — downgrade to Free, switch tier, or cancel. Subscription updates take effect at the end of the subscription period: end of the billing month on monthly, end of the billing year on yearly.

  3. Step 03

    Confirm

Confirm. Linear schedules the change for end-of-period. You keep paid features until then.

Gotchas

What trips people up.

  • Critical

    No refunds — period

Linear states explicitly: no refunds for cancellations mid-subscription, no credit for users removed mid-month. Picking the right cancellation moment matters because Linear genuinely won't refund the unused months. If you're considering an annual commit, start monthly first.

  • Critical

    250-issue write-lock on Free

After downgrading to Free, existing issues stay but if the workspace has more than 250 issues you can't create new ones. Existing data is preserved; the workspace just becomes write-locked above the cap until you upgrade or delete enough issues.

  • Caution

Everyone becomes an Admin on Free

Linear's Free plan is all-Admin: any role differentiation (Members, Guests) collapses to Admin. If you relied on role-based visibility, that boundary disappears on downgrade.

  • Caution

Plan is per workspace, not per account

Cancelling Linear in one workspace doesn't affect another. If you have multiple workspaces under the same account, each carries its own subscription.

  • Watch

    Enterprise is yearly-only

Enterprise plans are sold exclusively on annual billing. You can't shift Enterprise to monthly to soften a future cancellation; you have to ride out the year.

  • Watch

Mid-month seat changes don't move the bill

Adding users mid-month doesn't charge until next month; removing users mid-month doesn't credit. Plan additions and removals around your billing date if cost matters.

Data after cancellation

What happens to your account.

Linear does not delete data on downgrade or cancellation. Issues, projects, comments, and history stay in the workspace. The change is access: the 250-issue cap blocks new issue creation on Free, all members become Admins, and paid features (Cycles, Roadmaps, Insights tiers, etc.) become unavailable until you upgrade again.

Refund policy

What you get back.

No refunds. Linear states explicitly: cancellations mid-subscription do not get refunds, and removing users mid-month does not credit the remainder of the month. Plans run to the end of the billing period — monthly or annual — and you keep features until then but receive no cash back for unused time. Start on monthly if you're uncertain about a year-long commit.

Alternatives

Lower-friction options.

If you don’t need to fully cancel, one of these often accomplishes what you actually want.

  • Switch from yearly to monthly first

If you're locked into an annual plan and want to cancel, ride out the year and switch to monthly at renewal — then cancel at the next monthly cycle. Linear's no-refund policy makes mid-annual cancellation expensive.

  • Downgrade Plus → Basic instead of cancelling

If cost is the issue, drop to Basic instead of going all the way to Free. Same Plans flow, lower bill, keep most paid features.

  • Use Linear for Startups program

If you qualify, Linear's startup program offers up to 6 months free on Basic or Business — cheaper than cancelling and re-onboarding to a competitor.

After you cancel

Track the cancellation. Spot the charge that didn’t stop.

Cancelling is one click. Verifying that the charge actually stops on your next statement is the part most people skip. Spendrein watches your bank statement after a cancellation and flags any recurring charge from the same vendor that keeps coming through, so you find out from us before you find out from a surprise renewal invoice.

Spendrein does not impersonate you with vendor support agents or click through their cancellation flows. It tracks what you did, watches for the result on your statement, and gives you a public reference you can share with the vendor if they push back.

Questions

Cancelling Linear, plainly explained.

  • Where is the Linear cancel button?

Settings → Workspace → Plans inside any Linear workspace. There's no separate Cancel page — downgrade to Free is the cancellation path.

  • Who can cancel a Linear subscription?

Workspace admins. Members cannot cancel or change the plan.

  • Will I get a refund if I cancel Linear mid-year?

No. Linear's policy is explicit: no refunds for cancellations mid-subscription. You keep paid features until the end of the billing period (monthly or annual), but unused months are not refunded. If you're uncertain about an annual commit, start monthly first.

  • What happens to my Linear issues when I downgrade to Free?

Issues stay, but with a 250-issue cap on Free. If your workspace has more than 250 issues, you can keep them — you just can't create new ones until you reduce below the cap or upgrade again.

  • Does cancelling one Linear workspace affect my others?

No. Linear bills per workspace, not per account. Each workspace carries its own plan; cancelling one leaves the others on whatever they're on.

  • Can I cancel Linear Enterprise mid-year?

You can cancel, but Enterprise is sold annually only and there are no mid-cycle refunds. You keep Enterprise features until the year ends and then drop to whatever you select next. Plan around the renewal date.
