How to cancel Dropbox.

Cancelling an individual Dropbox plan downgrades you to Basic — files stay, storage caps at 2GB. The web cancel flow is four clicks once you're logged in. The traps are mobile-app purchases (you have to cancel through Apple, Google, or Microsoft instead) and the silent 2GB sync halt if your stored data exceeds the Basic cap.

The flow

  1. Step 01

    Log in to dropbox.com

    Open dropbox.com and log in with the account that holds the subscription.

  2. Step 02

    Open Manage account

    Click your avatar (profile picture or initials) in the bottom-left corner. Click Manage account.

  3. Step 03

    Click Cancel plan

    Scroll to the bottom of the Manage account page and click Cancel plan. If you don't see Cancel plan, your subscription was purchased through a mobile app store — you'll need to cancel from that app store instead.

  4. Step 04

    Pick a reason and confirm

    Select a cancellation reason. Click Continue canceling or Confirm change and follow the prompts. Dropbox emails confirmation from no-reply@dropbox.com with the subject 'Dropbox Plan will not renew.'

Gotchas

What trips people up.

  • Critical

    Mobile-store purchases must be cancelled from the store

    If you bought Dropbox through Apple, Google, or Microsoft, the web Cancel plan button won't appear. You have to cancel from that app store's subscription management UI. This catches a lot of people who thought they cancelled.

  • Critical

    2GB storage cap silently halts sync

    After downgrade to Basic you keep all your files, but storage is capped at 2GB. If your account exceeds the cap, Dropbox stops syncing files to your devices — silently. New uploads fail until you free space or upgrade.

  • Caution

    Expired card does NOT count as cancellation

    Letting your credit card expire doesn't cancel the plan. Banks frequently transfer recurring payments to the replacement card automatically. The only reliable way to stop charges is the in-product cancel flow.

  • Watch

    Mail-cancellation refund warning

    Dropbox accepts cancellation by physical mail to PO Box 77767, San Francisco, CA 94107 (US/Canada/Mexico) or PO Box 13480, Dublin 2, Ireland (rest of world) — but explicitly warns that mail takes longer to process and charges that hit during processing won't be refunded.

  • Watch

    App deletion is not cancellation

    Removing the Dropbox app from your computer or phone doesn't cancel the plan or delete the account. The subscription keeps billing.

What happens to your account.

Cancelling downgrades you to Dropbox Basic. You don't lose access to any files or folders stored in Dropbox — but storage caps at 2GB. If you're over the cap, Dropbox stops syncing to your devices until you free space. Cancellation is not the same as account deletion: deleting your Dropbox account is a separate flow at help.dropbox.com/account-access/delete-account.

Dropbox doesn't publish a flat refund schedule in this article. Refund eligibility lives at help.dropbox.com/plans/refund. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle (monthly or yearly), so you keep paid features until the period ends without an additional charge.

Lower-friction options.

If you don’t need to fully cancel, one of these often accomplishes what you actually want.

  • Change to a smaller individual plan

    Instead of cancelling, switch to a cheaper Dropbox plan from the same Manage account → Change plan flow. Select your target plan, review the change, and confirm.

  • Delete the account entirely

    If you want files gone too, account deletion is a separate flow (help.dropbox.com/account-access/delete-account) that removes the account and its data after a grace period.

Cancelling Dropbox, plainly explained.

  • Where is the Dropbox cancel button?

    Log in to dropbox.com → click your avatar in the bottom-left → click Manage account → scroll to the bottom → click Cancel plan. If you don't see Cancel plan, your plan was purchased through a mobile app store and you need to cancel there instead.

  • Will I lose my Dropbox files when I cancel?

    No — you keep access to all files and folders. Storage caps at 2GB on the Basic plan after cancellation. If you exceed that, Dropbox stops syncing new files to your devices until you free space or upgrade again.

  • I cancelled Dropbox but I'm still being charged. Why?

    Most often: the subscription was purchased through an app store (Apple, Google, or Microsoft) and the web cancel didn't apply. Check your Apple/Google/Microsoft subscriptions list and cancel there. Letting a credit card expire also doesn't cancel — banks roll recurring payments to the new card.

  • Can I get a refund for unused Dropbox months?

    Refund eligibility is handled separately at help.dropbox.com/plans/refund. The default behavior is that cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle and you aren't refunded automatically.

  • Does Dropbox have a grace period after cancellation?

    You keep paid-plan access until the end of the current billing cycle, then drop to Basic. There isn't a separate grace period on top of that.

  • Is cancelling the same as deleting my Dropbox account?

    No. Cancellation downgrades you to Basic with 2GB storage and keeps your account and files. Account deletion is a separate flow at help.dropbox.com/account-access/delete-account that removes the account and its data.
